- 1 teaspoon baking soda

- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups honey crisp apples, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar (for icing)
- 1 tablespoon milk (for icing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix well. Stir in the vanilla.
- Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
- Fold in the chopped apples and walnuts, if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- For the icing, whisk together powdered sugar, brown sugar, and milk until smooth.
- Drizzle the icing over the warm cake before serving.

Use fresh honey crisp apples for the best flavor and keep ingredients at room temperature for a uniform batter.
