Extra-firm tofu shines in this crispy honey garlic tofu, featuring golden-brown bites coated with a rich, sticky sauce.

- 1 block Extra-Firm Tofu (about 14–16 ounces)
- ½ cup Cornstarch
- ¼ cup Soy Sauce
- 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar
- ¼ cup Honey
- 4–5 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger (grated)
- ½ teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil
- about ½ cup Cooking Oil (for frying)
- Sesame Seeds (for garnish, optional)
- Green Onions (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Press the tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain excess water. Wrap the tofu in paper towels and impose weight on it. Press for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare the tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into cubes about ¾ inch thick for even cooking.
- Coat the tofu: In a medium bowl, sprinkle cornstarch over the cubed tofu. Toss gently until all sides are coated.
- Make the honey garlic sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes until smooth. Set aside.
- Fry the tofu until crispy: Heat cooking oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, sufficient to cover about ¼ inch of the bottom. Add the tofu in a single layer and fry until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes per side.
- Coat in sauce: Once crispy, remove the tofu and wipe the skillet clean. Pour in the honey garlic sauce and simmer for a minute. Add the tofu and toss to coat.
- Garnish and serve: Transfer the coated tofu to a serving dish and garnish with optional sesame seeds and green onions. Serve immediately.
Notes
For extra crispiness, consider double-coating the tofu with cornstarch. Adjust sweetness and tanginess of the sauce according to your taste.
