Ingredients

  • 1 block Extra-Firm Tofu (about 1416 ounces)
  • ½ cup Cornstarch
  • ¼ cup Soy Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar
  • ¼ cup Honey
  • 45 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger (grated)
  • ½ teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil
  • about ½ cup Cooking Oil (for frying)
  • Sesame Seeds (for garnish, optional)
  • Green Onions (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain excess water. Wrap the tofu in paper towels and impose weight on it. Press for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into cubes about ¾ inch thick for even cooking.
  3. Coat the tofu: In a medium bowl, sprinkle cornstarch over the cubed tofu. Toss gently until all sides are coated.
  4. Make the honey garlic sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes until smooth. Set aside.
  5. Fry the tofu until crispy: Heat cooking oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, sufficient to cover about ¼ inch of the bottom. Add the tofu in a single layer and fry until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes per side.
  6. Coat in sauce: Once crispy, remove the tofu and wipe the skillet clean. Pour in the honey garlic sauce and simmer for a minute. Add the tofu and toss to coat.
  7. Garnish and serve: Transfer the coated tofu to a serving dish and garnish with optional sesame seeds and green onions. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra crispiness, consider double-coating the tofu with cornstarch. Adjust sweetness and tanginess of the sauce according to your taste.
