- 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into cubes
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 2 cups carrots, sliced
- 2 cups potatoes, diced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon rosemary
- Salt and pepper to taste
- French bread, sliced
- 2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
Instructions
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the beef cubes over medium heat. Once browned, remove them and set aside.
- In the same pot, add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Incorporate the minced garlic and continue to cook for an additional minute.
- Return the browned beef to the pot and add the beef broth, carrots, potatoes, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 90-120 minutes until the beef becomes tender.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In an oven-safe bowl, ladle the stew, then top it with slices of French bread. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the top.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
For a thicker stew, whisk in cornstarch mixed with cold water. Let the stew sit after cooking for enhanced flavors.
