French Onion Beef Stew

Description

A comforting and hearty stew made with beef, caramelized onions, and aromatic herbs, perfect for chilly evenings.


Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into cubes
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups carrots, sliced
  • 2 cups potatoes, diced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • French bread, sliced
  • 2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the beef cubes over medium heat. Once browned, remove them and set aside.
  2. In the same pot, add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Incorporate the minced garlic and continue to cook for an additional minute.
  4. Return the browned beef to the pot and add the beef broth, carrots, potatoes, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 90-120 minutes until the beef becomes tender.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. In an oven-safe bowl, ladle the stew, then top it with slices of French bread. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the top.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For a thicker stew, whisk in cornstarch mixed with cold water. Let the stew sit after cooking for enhanced flavors.
