Description

A flavorful twist on traditional meatloaf, featuring caramelized onions and Swiss cheese for a comforting home-cooked meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Ground Beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
  • 2 medium Onions (caramelized for sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder (or fresh garlic for a robust flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder (to enhance onion flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme (or Italian seasoning as a substitute)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce (soy sauce can work in a pinch)
  • 1 large Egg (acts as a binder)
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs if desired)
  • 1 cup Swiss Cheese (substitute with Gruyère or cheddar if preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or Olive Oil (for caramelizing onions)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions and sauté until caramelized and golden brown, about 15–20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, and breadcrumbs.
  5. Once the onions are cooled, fold them into the meat mixture.
  6. Add garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined.
  7. Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in a baking dish or on a lined baking sheet.
  8. Top the meatloaf with Swiss cheese, allowing it to melt during cooking.
  9. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until cooked through (160°F internally).
  10. Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Let the caramelized onions cool before mixing to maintain the integrity of the meat mixture. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatloaf tender.
