Ingredients

  • – 1 pound (454 g) lean ground beef (90% lean)
  • – 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • – 1/4 cup (60 ml) packed brown sugar
  • – 1/4 cup (60 ml) reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • – 2 teaspoons (10 ml) sesame oil
  • – 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) ground ginger
  • – 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) crushed red pepper flakes
  • – 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) pepper
  • – 2 cups (380 g) hot cooked white or brown rice
  • – sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large frying pan, cook the beef and garlic on medium heat, breaking it up, until the pink color is gone. Remove any excess fat.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, red pepper flakes, and pepper. Drizzle this mixture over the beef and let it cook gently for a minute or two.
  3. Place the beef mixture on top of hot rice and finish with a sprinkle of green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • For a healthier option, try using ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef.
  • Feel free to incorporate extra vegetables like bell peppers or broccoli for added nutrition and flavor.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preferred level of spiciness.
