Description
A classic homemade apple pie featuring a flaky crust and a sweet, spiced apple filling, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 egg yolk (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- For the crust, combine flour, salt, and sugar in a bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in water, a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture comes together to form a dough.
- Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
- For the filling, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a bowl and toss to coat.
- Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface, then place it in a pie dish. Fill with apple mixture. Roll out the second disc and place over the filling. Seal and cut slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
- Brush with egg yolk.
- Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden.
- Let cool before serving.
Notes
Experiment with different apple varieties for unique flavors. Consider adding vanilla extract or ginger for extra warmth.
