Description

Discover the secret to making delicious homemade apple butter with our easy-to-follow recipe. Learn how to create this sweet and flavorful spread today!

Ingredients

  • – 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) soft, sweet apples, cored and chopped into small pieces, about 1/4″
  • – 1 cup (200 g) brown sugar, firmly packed
  • – 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) ground cinnamon
  • – 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) salt
  • – 1/8 teaspoon (1 ml) ground cloves
  • – 1 vanilla bean (may substitute 1 1/2 teaspoons (8 ml) vanilla extract)

Instructions

  1. Chop the apples into small cubes, approximately 1/4 inch in size, removing the cores but leaving the skins intact.
  2. Transfer the chopped apples into a large slow cooker.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt, and cloves, ensuring they are well mixed.
  4. Evenly distribute the sugar mixture over the apples and stir until everything is thoroughly incorporated.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 10 hours.
  6. After the cooking time is complete, blend the apples with an immersion blender until they are smooth and free of lumps. If you lack an immersion blender, see note 2 for alternatives.
  7. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean and add them to the smooth apple mixture. Alternatively, use vanilla extract if preferred.
  8. Continue cooking in the slow cooker on low heat for an additional 2 hours without the lid, stirring occasionally.
  9. Store the apple butter in a sealed container in the refrigerator, where it will remain fresh for about 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Infuse vanilla bean seeds in apple butter overnight for a richer vanilla flavor.
  • Use a regular blender or food processor if you don’t have an immersion blender.
  • Adjust sugar and spice levels to taste, and try adding apple cider vinegar or lemon juice for added flavor.
