Description

A delicious and comforting casserole made with layers of tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese.


Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 56 medium russet potatoes (thinly sliced, about 1/8 inch)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella (optional)
  • 1 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing the dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
  2. Brown the ground beef with chopped onion in a skillet until fully cooked, draining any excess fat.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and optional paprika for added flavor.
  4. Whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk in a separate bowl until smooth.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  6. Spread half of the beef mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  7. Pour half of the sauce over the beef layer and sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and sauce. Finish by topping with the rest of the cheddar cheese and optional mozzarella.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender, and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  11. Let your casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

You can add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms to enhance nutrition and flavor profiles.
