- 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
- ¼ cup butter
- 8 cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
- ⅔ cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- Coarse sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat.
- Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt, and stir together.
- Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the apples soften, then remove from heat to cool.
- Divide the prepared pie dough into two halves and roll out one disc to about 1/8-inch thick.
- Transfer this rolled dough to the pie plate, pressing it into the bottom and sides.
- Prepare an egg wash by whisking the egg and water in a small bowl.
- Transfer the cooled apple filling into the crust.
- Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling or create a lattice topping.
- Brush the top with the egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F and continue baking for 40 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of apple varieties for depth of flavor, and ensure the apples are cut uniformly for even cooking.
