Description

A vibrant Goan shrimp curry blending coconut and spices, bringing warmth and tradition to your table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 grams medium-sized shrimp (cleaned and deveined)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cup grated fresh coconut
  • 810 Kashmiri dry red chilies (stalks removed)
  • 56 cloves garlic (peeled)
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 inch cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (divided)
  • 2 teaspoons chopped green chilies
  • ½ cup chopped onions
  • ½ cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 2 teaspoons tamarind paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 cup coconut milk

Instructions

  1. Marinate the prawns: In a bowl, combine the shrimp with salt, turmeric powder, and lime juice. Let them marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Make the masala paste: In a dry skillet, lightly toast the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, bitter red chilies, black peppercorns, cloves, and cinnamon over medium heat for a couple of minutes, or until fragrant. Transfer to a blender, add grated coconut and garlic, and blend until smooth, adding water if necessary.
  3. Make the curry: In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons of coconut oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Stir in chopped tomatoes and cook until softened. Add masala paste and cook a few minutes. Next, add marinated shrimp and cook until pink. Pour in coconut milk, add tamarind paste, and adjust salt. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider adding more coconut oil. Adjust the number of Kashmiri chilies for heat according to your preference.
