- 1 lb ground beef (lean mix, 85/15)
- 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter (melted)
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Garlic powder (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart until fully browned (7 to 10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until translucent and fragrant.
- Season the beef-onion mix with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, stirring for another minute.
- Slice the potatoes thinly while the beef cooks. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and lay half of the potato slices in an even layer, seasoning with a touch of salt and pepper.
- Spread the beef-onion mixture evenly over the potatoes.
- Layer the remaining potato slices on top.
- Whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour over the top of the casserole.
- Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly over everything for complete coverage.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Check the doneness by poking a fork into the potatoes—they should be tender. Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
