Description

A nostalgic southern comfort dish combining tender cabbage, savory shrimp, and a medley of spices, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil (or cooking oil of choice)
  • 6 strips of bacon, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1 package andouille sausage, sliced diagonally into ½ inch pieces
  • 1 lb uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 orange bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons all-purpose seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add avocado oil. Once heated, cook chopped bacon and andouille sausage until browned and crisp, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from skillet.
  2. In a bowl, toss shrimp with Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, and lemon pepper seasoning. Add shrimp to the skillet and cook each side for about 60 seconds. Remove shrimp and set aside with bacon and sausage.
  3. Save about a teaspoon of the remaining grease in the skillet. Add butter, then toss in sliced onion and bell peppers. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent. Stir in minced garlic.
  4. Next, add the chopped cabbage. Turn the heat down to medium-low and cover the skillet. The cabbage will wilt down over the next 10-12 minutes. Mix the cabbage and pepper mixture to combine once softened.
  5. Add all-purpose seasoning, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix and cover again for another 5 minutes to marry the flavors.
  6. Remove the lid and fold in the bacon, sausage, and shrimp. Stir gently to combine everything. Serve over rice, with cornbread, or on its own.

Notes

For extra heat, adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning or add more red pepper flakes. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
